The International Campaign against Impunity (ICAI) is committed to support victims of crimes against humanity, war crimes, genocide and torture in their fight against impunity.
The Campaign is aimed at raising public awareness about the crimes allegedly committed by current or former high ranking public officials such as General Pinochet, Hassine Habré, Slobodan Milosevic, Sassou Nguessou, Henry Kissinger, General Suharto, Rios Montt and Idi Amin as well as about crimes perpetrated by companies such as TotalFinaElf.
By providing detailed information packs to the members of the human rights committees of national and supranational (EU) parliaments, ICAI will introduce high profile debates on impunity in Parliaments across Europe and elsewhere.
ICAI encourages national legislative bodies to integrate international human rights and humanitarian law into national legislation and jurisprudence, including laws that allow for the exercise of universal jurisdiction for crimes against humanity, war crimes, genocide and torture.
The Campaign is also committed to increasing the number of states party to international human rights agreements and to supporting these states in enacting the requisite implementing legislation to enabling prosecutions in accordance with these obligations.
ICAI supports the establishment of the International Criminal Court (ICC), and, in its absence, ICAI will assist in filing complaints in countries with far-reaching universal jurisdiction statutes, such as Belgium, Luxembourg and New Zealand.
Public debates, seminars and conferences will be held in Berlin, Brussels, London, Washington, DC and Toronto to draw attention to the issues raised by ICAI.
These goals and projects will be realized though cooperation with and the assistance of victims, human rights organisations, university groups, academics, the media, judges politicians.
